Amble Town Council Awards 2016
Mayor Jane Dargue was delighted to welcome around 60 people to the annual awards ceremony held in mid- July. Whilst having refreshments they enjoyed watching a display of their garden photographs kindly compiled by Jim Donnelly. Due to the number of high standard gardens, the shortlist was reduced to about 50 areas to be seen by the judge from Alnwick Gardens, but everyone, including businesses, are thanked for their efforts to brighten the town for passers-by.
This year, as well as the usual awards, there were two for Super Gardeners- those who have won their ward three times in the last five years- who were given £50 of garden vouchers to spend.
The Secret Garden section- an area hidden from those passing by- received a greater number of entries and the winner, 17 Brinkburn Place, will be open for public viewing on Sunday 14th August from 12noon – 3pm.
Pride in Amble- for their sterling efforts in the town’s Memorial Gardens- won the award given to those who use their time voluntarily to enhance a business premise or a larger community area for the enjoyment of others. Allotment areas have improved greatly with the move towards healthier lifestyle and food- there’s nothing quite like the taste of home grown vegetables. There were winners and Most Improved in both areas.
The newly introduced Community Award goes to either an individual or group who through voluntary endeavours has contributed outstandingly in a way that has demonstrated commitment to the town by promoting it, doing something to enhance people’s lives or what the town has to offer them or by fostering a sense of community spirit.
The Junior Award was presented to a group of young people who regularly help in the Town- whether picking litter or assisting at exhibitions and events, they are always willing, cheerful and hard working. Young people often receive bad press but this group are an integral part of the community and striving to be good responsible citizens of the future. Amble Detachment of the Northumbria Army Cadets was awarded £25 towards the group’s activity.
The Adult award went to a group who started with small numbers, little finance, some experience but plenty of enthusiasm. They have not only preserved a traditional feature of this town’s life but in so doing have taken their venture further afield spreading the name of Amble and how a community working together can achieve great things. The winner of this award is Amble Coastal Rowing Club who receive £50 towards the group’s activity.
Anyone who could not attend is invited to collect their certificate or award from the Council offices before the end of August.
