On Thursday 24th October 2013, the Mayor, Craig Weir visited Harbour Lights Community Choir’s rehearsal to present them with 2 performance microphones and a cheque for the amount of £50 to explore the possibility of setting up a junior community choir.
The Harbour Lights Community Choir formed three years ago. It received support from 20,000 Voices in order to become established and determine whether or not there was sufficient demand for such an organisation. The Choir meet once a week during school term time on Thursday evenings between 19:30 and 21:30 in St. Cuthbert’s Parish Hall.
Most members of the choir had very little previous experience and the choir is aimed at providing an opportunity to experience choral singing in a relaxed, friendly and fun filled atmosphere.
The choir, which is led by Flora Smith, has participated in many community events including the Christmas Lights switch on, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and more recently the Puffin Festival.
Whilst we couldn’t persuade Craig to join in with the singing, he did stay to listen to a couple of songs (‘ Harbour Lights’ written by Flora Smith and ‘Lights’ written by Sarah Gray) which were very pleasing to the ear.
Amble Town Council consider grants and donation in the months of July and January. The Harbour Lights Choir grant was agreed in July 2013.
