MAYOR’S MUSINGS

Next year it will be 42 years since the first Mayor of Amble was elected. Those of you who were around then will remember the first one- Councillor T Straffen- who was honoured when Straffen Court was built. The title of Mayor is normally given to Towns with a certain population and with the consent of the community. In Amble’s case the Mayor is also the Chair of the Council – these are not two separate roles. Some of the duties are to represent the Town of Amble during civic events and to be the representative for County wide events.  These could vary from Remembrance Day Parades, and to functions which commemorate achievements of other Towns and Villages.

For example in the past year the Mayor has attended functions for V.E. Day, Alnwick Xmas Carol Service, Warkworth Magna Carta and others of a minor but equally important nature. This does not mean that the Mayor is exempt from events in Amble as seen by taking part in School presentations, opening ceremonies, Good Citizen Awards, Garden Awards and many others on behalf of the Town. Future functions are the Reception at R.A.F. Boulmer for their Battle of Britain Anniversary, V.J. Day, Remembrance Sunday and many more- so a full diary. When you see the Mayor taking part in events and getting a photograph in the papers, remember it is for you, the community of Amble, raising the town’s profile and making sure others are aware of what a great place Amble is to live.                               Mayor Craig Weir
