During the Puffin Festival, Amble Town Council (ATC) and the artist have been overwhelmed by the very positive response to the internal painting of the Church Street bus shelter.
Due to the stringent economic cuts over the past few years NCC have transferred some ‘assets’ to ATC including responsibility for Bus Shelters. A programme of repair and renewal has been carried out since this happened and financially thanks to the generosity of our County Councillors, under the Members Small Grants Scheme, a new shelter has been placed on Acklington Road. ATC will soon be replacing the shelter in High Street and work will also be carried out on the shelter outside JCSC.
The stone shelters which are more prone to vandalism needed a different approach. Last year a suggestion was made that the central located bus shelter in Church Street should have a mural painted. After discussion, during recent public council meetings, it was decided it would be an artistic interpretation of scenes and places- including the name- ranging from the historic to the modern day.
Similar projects over previous years planned with the schools to incorporate the pupils had unfortunately not progressed to fruition for various reasons and working with professional ‘graffiti’ artists can be quite costly. Therefore the offer from a renowned local artist to work on this in memory of her Grandmother was accepted and after a pressure wash by NCC, painting began 3 weeks ago. Changes were made on the spot to represent the public’s comments as Sarah worked. Once the anti-vandal coating is on, the seat plus floor painting will finish the project.
ATC apologises for any inconvenience to the travelling public whilst this work is in progress. It is hoped this will remain for many years to come; we will monitor it and refurbish as needed. We urge the community to keep this focal area for our town clear of vandalism in any form, be it Graffiti or Litter. We know this is difficult for some people but the reporting process is easy and you can be anonymous to the Police or ATC.
